14.07 Pie Chart Map Type

Pie Chart Map Type

The pie chart map type shows how each data item compares to all the other data items being mapped. In other words, each item mapped is given a different percentage of the pie’s shape. The pie can display data in two different ways: by area or by category. If you map by area, then the pie chart assigns one segment of the pie to each location within that area. You can look at the pie chart and see which locations have the greatest allocation. You can also map the data by category within each area. For example, the categories could be based on product sales and the pie chart would assign one segment for each product. You can look at the map and see which products have the greatest percentage of sales in each area.

To tell the Map Expert which field to use for comparison (e.g. product type, location, etc.), use the On Change Of property on the Data tab. We’ll look at that in more detail in Tutorial 14-2. Figure 14-10 is an example of a pie chart map type.
